We get into the woods to select trees for a work with TOYOTA.
This woods are dotted with 300~400-year-old trees.

 

秋晴れの森に来ています。目当ての立木に紐を結び目印を付けて山を下ります。
樹齢300〜400年の木々が点在する山林です。
伐採は、樹木が休眠して水上げしなくなる冬季が適しています。「彼岸から彼岸まで」とされてきた伐採適期ですが、秋のお彼岸を過ぎてもこの暑さ。もう少し気温が下がるまで待つことに。
冬季、体を凍らせないために、樹木は自ら水分を抜いて眠ります。

北海道厚沢部町に来ています。
今日の最低気温は-12℃、最高気温は-11℃、観測史上最も強い記録的な寒波に見舞われています。

落葉する広葉樹は、樹木が休眠している冬が伐採のピーク。北海道の森から多様な広葉樹が集まるこちらの製材所は、この寒さのなかでもフル稼動です。

北海道に自生する樹木と言えば、艶やかな白い木肌を持つイタヤカエデです。春夏のコーディネートに活躍する白木のアイテムの大切な素材となります。カエデ特有の杢（もく）である貴重なバーズアイも見つかりました。粉雪が降りしきるなか、ひとつひとつ、木の表情を選び取る作業は続きます。

3月21〜22日、ウッドブレスレットとウッドリングを中心としたオーダー会を開催します。北海道の大自然から生まれる、白く目の詰んだイタヤカエデも並びます。

墨を流し入れたような黒柿の縞杢。柿の木の千本に一本あるかないかと言われる希少な銘木です。
